Disclaimer: Take everything here with a grain of salt. Of course, you can buy nice things in life but everything should happen within consideration to what you can actually afford and what makes sense to you personally.
Some things are just not worth spending tons of money on. We all have our preferences on what is important to save on and here I am sharing mine. Let get straight into the list.
1. Textbooks!
Please save your coins on textbooks. There are different places you can purchase or rent textbooks for cheap such as Amazon.com and Chegg.com and any bookstores close to your campus that is not affiliated with your university. You should very rarely purchase things from you student bookstore on campus.
Renting Books
Renting textbooks is a great idea if you don’t believe that you are going to use the textbook past the semester you will need it. If the book has to do with your future endeavors it may be wise to go ahead and purchase the book to refer back to later. But, don’t be a hoarder because that is basically me in a nutshell. I say that I am going to eventually use something later and never do. So, truly take into consideration if you will use the book in the fututre.
2. A Car
You need a vehicle that will get you from point A to point B. I understand you may want to flex or show off a nice car but in reality that is not really important. There is no reason to pay an expensive car note when you have gas, insurance, inspections, maintenance and so much more to worry about.
I’m not saying get a car that you’ll be embarrassed to drive in. Get something that you are comfortable in and can afford. I recommend getting a vehicle that you can save up for and pay off all at one time because we as college students don’t have time or money to pay off a car each month when we are worried about paying off tuition and so many other important things!
3. Rent
I say save on rent because you should be living in a place that you can afford. Why spend on a place that you will be struggling to pay every month? It is honestly not worth the stress. Compromise is something that will need to happen in some instances.
I personally don’t pay rent because I am a Resident Assistant here on my campus and with this position, my room and board are paid for. Of course, there are many commitments I made when accepting this position, but it’s worth it.
This was a decision that I made because I knew it would benefit me financially in the end. Of course, during my senior year, I wanted to get an apartment with my friends but I felt like the smartest decision for me was to have to not worry about paying rent. I don’t regret this decision at all! I have the rest of my life to pay rent or my mortgage,😂 so for right now, I’m good.
4. Basic Clothing
Things like plain tees, tanks, socks etc. you can for sure save your money on. Save on these things because you don’t keep them for long anyway. You need to swap these items out pretty often, so why spend tons of money on it? The answer is, don’t.
5. Jeans
Thrift stores are amazing places with many possibilities. I love to wear mom jeans and I find all of them at thrift stores for less than $10. Since mom jeans are the new craze (but not really) stores like Urban Outfitters and Zara will upsell you and what you to spend close to $100 on those type of jeans. If I can get them for significantly less, best believe that I will and you should too!
However, if you are buying jeans new I don’t recommend buying them cheap because jeans are an item that should be of good quality. If you are constantly going back to the store to buy these $15 jeans you essentially are not any saving money. So, be smart and take all of these things into consideration.
6. Make-Up
There are many companies that have cheap great quality makeup. Some of these brands include NYX, Elf, L’Oréal, Black Opal, ColourPop, and Black Radiance, among many others.
You don’t need to get all of the latest make up palates and highlighters that you see on YouTube. It’s honestly not necessary; you can get the essential things that work for you and then keep your collection to those essentials.
Buying high-end makeup is not a bad thing but makeup truly lasts a very long time so you honestly don’t need to be at Ulta or Sephora every weekend. You may be losing so much money because you always want the latest craze. Control yourselves ladies!
7. Cell Phone Service
Last but not least, save on your cell phone service. I have had people tell me that they spend close to $150 on one line of service. That is absurd. If yall don’t stop with the bougie attitudes and get you a prepaid plan. LOL. Seriously though. This plan is paid for every month but it is significantly cheaper than a contract service. You can even get it with very well know companies like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verison.
I personally pay $50 a month for my cell phone services. I have Straight Talk, which is a company that gets its service from many of the other more expensive networks. On their website, it says, “We’re on all four of America’s Best Networks so you’ve always got America’s Best Coverage. We share networks with the four top carriers.” So, essentially I’m getting close to if not the same service as AT&T, Verison, and T-Mobile customers and paying significantly less. That’s a win for me in my book.
As you can see I use a less known company but it literally gives me the same service as the know companies. This reminds me of shopping in the supermarket and getting store brand cereal instead of the name brand version. They both give close to the same results. So, stop spending so much on something that you can save money on!

Jeans lol this girl dreads jeans tremendously. Maybe I’ll try the thrift stores more often! As far as those cheaper make up brands. How is color pop? Often see mixed reviews about them.

Hey girl! I have lippies from Colour Pop and I like them a lot. They are super pigmented and they’re only like 5 or 6 dollars. I’ve had friends tell me their highlighters are great as well. Definitely wouldn’t hurt to try them out!
& Why do you dread jeans? Lol you will find so many great things in thrift store!
